Boston

Defending Jacob

Boston connects the courtroom story to the Barber family’s attempted escape from it. It is the city they leave when they fly to Jamaica, and, in the trial’s competing accounts, part of the local landscape that frames the killing and the jurors’ desire for an intelligible explanation.

Boston in the Trial Narrative

In the prosecution’s opening, Neal Logiudice places the killing close to home and school: Ben Rifkin had left his home only minutes earlier and was found near the school he was walking to. The distance and ordinary morning routine make the crime feel immediate and local rather than remote. Logiudice’s account turns that setting into a story of a boy who supposedly snapped after ordinary teasing, but the narrator observes that the prosecutor has no firm answer for what triggered the killing and can offer only theories and probabilities.

A City Left Behind

After the case, the narrator describes his professional future as unsettled. He remains on paid leave from the district attorney’s office, expects that he is finished as a prosecutor, and cannot tell what work might follow. Laurie, meanwhile, has not returned to her former self after the trial: she remains thinner and more guarded, and the family’s old habit of openly discussing its troubles has receded. Boston is the point of departure from this strained life, not evidence that its consequences have disappeared.

Departure for Jamaica

The family chooses Waves, a resort in Jamaica, through its heavily idealized website, then books a two-week stay. The narrator says the prospect of leaving lifted their spirits before they had even traveled; the change continued on the flight from Boston and on arrival at Montego Bay. Jacob grins, Laurie holds the narrator’s hand, and the family experiences a rare, surprised happiness. The narrator recognizes that the holiday has not made their troubles less real, but says they have earned the break. In this sense, Boston marks the threshold between a life shaped by the trial and a temporary effort to set that life aside.
